Deepika Padukone fans were in for a big surprise on Thursday morning as The Academy’s official Instagram handle shared the video of the Bollywood actress’ popular song ‘Deewani Mastani’ on its page. Sung by Shreya Ghoshal, ‘Deewani Mastani’ is a hit track from filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s acclaimed film Bajirao Mastani, co-starring Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra.

Sharing the video, The Academy wrote, “Deepika Padukone performing “Deewani Mastani” (sung by Shreya Ghoshal) from the movie ‘Bajirao Mastani.’ The video went viral in no time, with fans thanking the Oscars for recognising Hindi cinema.

One user wrote, “ABOUT TIME THE ACADEMY RECOGNISED THIS CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE.” Another one said, “The beauty of deepika in this song, I don’t think any other actress would be able to pull this off like her, this will go down as one of the greatest of all time in Hindi Cinema!!!” “Thank you for recognising the most beautifully shot song of all time,” a third user commented.

Deepika’s actor-husband Ranveer, who played the role of Peshwa Bajirao in the movie, was quick to react to the post. “Mesmeric,” he commented. Deepika also reposted the reel on her Instagram stories.

Last year, Deepika Padukone introduced the performance of Oscar-winning song ‘Naatu Naatu’ from ‘RRR’ at the 95th Academy Awards. While introducing the act, Deepika said, “An irresistibly catchy chorus, electrifying beats and killer dance moves to match have made this next song a global sensation. It plays during a pivotal scene in RRR, a movie about the friendship between real-life Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. In addition to being sung in Telugu and illustrating the film’s anti-colonialist themes, it’s also a total banger. It’s got millions of views on YouTube and Tiktok, has audiences dancing in movie theatres all around the world, and is also the first song ever from an Indian production to be nominated for an Oscar.”

Naatu Naatu made history by becoming the first ever Telugu song to not only be performed and nominated but also won at the Oscars. The song, composed by M. M. Keeravani, competed with Applause from Tell it Like a Woman, Hold My Hand from Top Gun Maverick, Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and This Is a Life from Everything Everywhere All at Once in the Best Original Song category.
